Noise Sensitivities

Noise Sensitivity ADHD Hack

Studies have been conducted on working memory capacity have suggested that there is a bandwidth or a limit to hard focus. Attention can shift throughout the day from the external environment to internal thoughts, which is called mind wandering or daydreaming. It is important to have periods of time for the mind to wander to resolve internal noise. Applying high demands on the working memory can deplete bandwidth, which can interfere with the ability to reflect internally. Engaging in effortless attention activities can restore bandwidth; therefore, renewing working memory capacity and leaving room for self-reflection. Individuals with ADHD seem to be more susceptible to attention fatigue, therefore, directed attention should be purposeful and distractions minimized. Noise can interfere with one’s bandwidth of focus.

Keeping noise-canceling headphones in close proximity to the vacuum or work areas can make tasks less arduous. Limiting barriers and the number of steps it takes for tasks are important, so mental load does not diminish too fast.
